Linux @ Home
If you don't already know what Linux is: it is a free and
very powerful Unix version. The development of Linux isn't
done by one company/person. A whole Internet community is
writing and submitting code for the Linux kernel. This way of
development has created a hype around Open Source Software
lately. Along with this OSS hype a lot of major IT players see
Linux as a viable platform for their products: IBM, Netscape,
Oracle, Corel, Sun, SGI, Compaq and many other vendors. This
page will try to help Linux users to set up Linux in a home
situation.
Workstation @ Home
PC's are dirt cheap at the moment. The amount of
processing- and graphics power you get for your money is
incredible. A well build PC will outperform a Sun, Digital or
SGI workstation with a price that is easily two or three times
that of your PC. Combined with Linux as your operating system
you will get a very powerful workstation.
I'll show you the software that I use to build a workstation
Server @ Home
Don't dump your old 486 into the trashcan after buying your
new Dual AMD Athlon :-) This old machine can serve you for
years to come! Linux has very moderate hardware requirements,
an old 486 will make a perfect server. Most of the servers I
setup have the same software base. I will describe this base
to give you a head-start.
I'll first link all the software I normally use:
uprecords / webalizer / fwbuilder
